Finding a lawyer to handle a child’s custody case, help with a landlord-tenant problem, criminal matter and other legal issues have been made easier in New York. This has been made possible through an online portal that has been launched by the LRIS. Through https://nysbalris.legal.io one can access this confidential service 24 hours a day. The LRIS telephone service is still available for those who prefer it to the online portal.
How the Service Works
A client visits the website and fills a questionnaire in which they describe their matter and location after which is reviewed by the State Bar staff and matches the client with a lawyer who is located in the same or nearby community. The State Bar can also forward the request to the suitable county bar association if the client lives in one of the seventeen counties with a locally run lawyer referral service at no cost.
For the first a half an hour consultation with the attorney to whom they have been referred to, a $35 is charged, but in a case of social security, veterans and military law, personal injury, medical malpractice, workers compensation or unemployment the costs may vary. The client is no commitment to retain the attorney after the first consultation, but in the case of retention, an additional attorney fee is determined by the parties.
